Punjab Forensic Science Agency (PFSA)

Overview

Funding and Infrastructure: The facility spans 170,000 square feet and cost Rs. 3 billion to build. It operates with 14 specialized forensic disciplines under one roof, such as DNA analysis, toxicology, digital forensics, and firearms examination.

Achievements

Technological Edge: PFSA uses cutting-edge technology, including a DNA database with over 30,000 profiles and a firearm database with over 50,000 entries.

ISO Accreditation: PFSA achieved ISO 17025 accreditation within five years, a milestone recognized internationally.

Impact on Justice: It shifted Pakistan's reliance from eyewitness accounts to physical evidence, significantly improving conviction rates in criminal cases.

Case Handling: The agency has solved several high-profile cases, such as the Zainab Ansari murder case and the Ahmedpur Sharqia oil tanker explosion, showcasing its expertise in evidence analysis and identification.

Training and Capacity Building

Staff Training: PFSA provides forensic training to law enforcement, judiciary, and prosecutors to enhance crime scene evidence collection and analysis skills.

National Collaboration: It assists other provinces and international agencies in setting up forensic labs and training forensic professionals.

Challenges and Future Goals

Operational Gaps: PFSA requires further funding and legislative support to expand its DNA database and improve facilities like corpse handling for forensic purposes.

Continued Growth: It plans to strengthen its role in global forensic collaboration, receiving evidence and requests from international bodies like Interpol.

PFSA is a cornerstone of modernizing Pakistan’s approach to crime investigation, setting a benchmark for forensic excellence in the region.
